Alabama VA facilities to study psilocybin for depression treatment
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Two VA facilities in Alabama are participating in a clinical trial to test a psychedelic drug as a possible treatment for depression.
The Birmingham and Tuscaloosa VA facilities are among five sites involved in the study.
Psilocybin, a psychedelic compound found in certain mushrooms, will be studied in veterans with treatment-resistant depression, including some with PTSD.
Treatments will be administered in controlled clinical settings with psychological support.
