LIBERAL, Kan. (KWCH) – The City of Liberal issued a public advisory on Monday, confirming a reported mountain lion sighting at Arkalon Park, about 10 miles outside of town.
The city confirmed that state wildlife authorities were notified about the sighting and advised park visitors to be aware of their surroundings and to keep children and pets close by.
In its public alert, the city also offered insight into mountain lion behavior and what to do if you come into close contact with one.
The city pointed out that mountain lions are most active at dawn and dusk and during the night and that attacks on people are rare.
“If you see a [mountain] lion, stop and do not run. Maintain eye contact, do not turn your back, do not crouch down and make yourself look as big as possible,” the City of Liberal advised. “Speak calmly and use a firm voice. If attacked, fight back aggressively —mountain lions back down from difficult prey.”
The City of Liberal concluded its public alert with a reminder that hunting isn’t allowed at Arkalon Park and urged people “not to interact with potentially dangerous wildlife.”
