MISSOULA, Mont. — A woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries Monday after a surprise encounter with a presumed black bear while hiking with her dogs on the History Trail on Teton Pass near Jackson, Wyoming.

According to a Wyoming Game and Fish Department press release, the woman successfully deployed bear spray during the Aug. 10 encounter. She was able to walk back to the trailhead and was later treated at a local hospital.

Investigators determined the incident was likely a defensive encounter with a female black bear that had at least one cub. Officials said the area has dense vegetation and low visibility.

Game and Fish personnel did not locate any bears during a search of the area, and no further management action is planned.

The U.S. Forest Service issued an emergency closure of the History Trail following the encounter.

Wildlife officials are reminding people to carry accessible bear spray and remain alert while recreating in bear country, particularly as bears become more active while consuming calories ahead of winter hibernation.
