Brian Robinson was a major recruiting win for Kentucky in the 2024 high school recruiting cycle. The Youngstown native picked the Cats over Michigan, Penn State, and a host of others. Expectations were extremely high for the blue-chip prospect. Robinson has not come close to meeting those expectations.
Robinson enters year three in the Kentucky program having played just 12 defensive snaps and switched from outside linebacker to defensive line. The former ballyhooed recruit is still trying to find his way in college football. Defensive line coach Anwar Stewart believes this third-year player is still growing.
“Brian’s been doing well. Brian’s been doing really good. Brian’s one of those guys that — he’s steady. He’s just grinding. He just goes about his business every day,” Stewart told the media on Wednesday. “Brian has had a good camp. My job is to keep pushing him.”
“I know everybody is ready for Brian Robinson to break out. God willing, this is his year. He’s gonna have that opportunity. It’s my job to get his butt ready to go.”
Robinson appears buried on the depth chart as Kentucky’s fall camp is now one week old. Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace and South Alabama transfer Tyler Thomas seem poised to get the 4-3 defensive end snaps. Sam Greene, Lorenzo Cowan, CJ Works, and Gardner-Webb transfer Antonio O’Berry are all working at Jack linebacker. Robinson is grinding and trying to earn an opportunity. Stewart feels that he is getting closer to getting that big opportunity.
The former top-150 recruit has started to come out of his shell and is feeling more comfortable according to his position coach. Kentucky wants this young player to get lost in the process and just continue to work. There is optimism that the work will lead to an opportunity in a game at some point in the near future.
“Every day he’s depositing, depositing. Hard work,” Stewart said. “At the end of this thing, he’s going to be able to go back and withdraw from this.”
