UTICA, N.Y. — Jim Hickey is on his way to complete his 100-mile walk for a young girl with cancer.
WKTV reported that Hickey completed his walk earlier this week. Hickey, of New Jersey, is a cancer survivor who has walked nearly 10,000 miles to bring awareness to the disease. He lost his father to cancer.
Hickey now walks for children with cancer. This most recent 100-mile journey was for 9-year-old Jazalyn Moses.
“If I hear of a child with cancer in a certain area and I get permission to walk for them, then I will do a walk for that child and try to raise awareness to help them with their cancer and their cancer battle,” Hickey told CNY Central in June, before his walk began.
Just three days into the journey, Hickey went to sleep in Herkimer, N.Y. and fell sick. Doctors at Little Falls Hospital told him he had a stroke. But that didn’t stop him.
“The doctors in Little Falls told me my walking was pretty much done for a year, that I should stay off the road, but the doctors over in Syracuse, when I went there, told me something different,” said Hickey.
“They told me to give it a month, two months at the most, and when you start feeling better, you can get back out on the road. So, I just decided it was time to finish her walk, because you know if you break a promise to a nine-year-old girl with cancer, that’s a one-way ticket to hell, and I’m not going there.”
Hickey told WKTV that he’s already back on the road and headed toward Clinton, N.Y.
