(WJAR) — A massive spill from a tractor-trailer carrying thousands of pounds of squid caused a roadway to be closed for more than seven hours on Sunday.

The tractor-trailer tipped over at the intersection of Point Judith and Galilee Escape roads Sunday morning.

Crews were seen using skid steers to scrape the squid off the hot pavement.

“Squid has a distinctive odor to it, I’m a fisherman and I use squid for bait. I’m quite used to it, but it can be very foul-smelling especially if it lies on the road and stays there for a while. The fire department is doing a great job cleaning thing up as best they can,” Richard Stevens, a neighbor, said.

The tractor-trailer has since been towed away.

No one was injured in the incident.

The road reopened at about 5:30 p.m.
