SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Sorrento Fire ignited on Sunday afternoon, according to Watch Duty.

The 131-acre fire is burning between Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Carmel Mountain Road. The fire is threatening nearby structures and is 25% contained. Forward progress on the fire has stopped.

Northbound lanes on Sorrento Valley and Vista Sorrento Parkway are closed, and westbound 1081 Vista Sorrento Pkwy. Please avoid the area.

All evacuation warnings have now been lifted. Zone SDC-1444 has been split in two: Zone SDC-1444-A remains under an evacuation order. The evacuation order has been lifted for Zone SDC-1444-B, according to the Genasys Evacuation Map.

A temporary evacuation point was located at 4161 Eastgate Mall (Mandell Weiss Eastgate Park), but just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, all evacuation warnings were lifted.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

The fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. Sunday and grew rapidly during the afternoon, burning 131 acres.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Deputy Chief Dan Eddy said crews initially faced difficult access because the fire was burning along a hiking trail, but were able to stop the forward rate of spread within about an hour thanks to the help of multiple aircraft.

“It’s not somewhere you can ride your car into,” Eddy said. “Remember this is a hiking trail, so we had hard access getting our ground units in there. The aircraft were huge for us today in stopping the forward rate of spread.”

Eddy added that washouts from a previous fire also made it difficult for ground crews to reach the area, making aircraft critical to the initial attack.

Five fixed-wing aircraft are working the fire, with helicopters operating out of Hemet and Ramona. Aircraft are picking up water from a nearby golf course, with a turnaround time of less than three minutes to return to the canyon and make another drop.

Firefighters will continue working overnight to slow the fire, contain hot spots, and prevent it from jumping nearby roads.
