NILES, Mich. (WSBT) — Mayor Nick Shelton confirmed a 68-year-old woman has died in the fire, sharing his condolences.

Crews were called before 3 p.m. for a fire at the 200 block of North 7th Street in Niles.

Fire officials told WSBT 22 they are working now to determine whether this is a deadly house fire.

A fire department spokesman told us that an Amazon driver noticed an outdoor couch burning on the porch.

Police from several area departments, including Michigan State Police, are also on scene and have taped off the area.

According to the fire department, a total of four people were inside, but a family member is telling firefighters one person did not make it out.

At this point, the fire is contained, but neither fire officials nor police are confirming if someone is dead inside.

Emergency crews have moved our photographer a little farther from the scene, but he tells us they were blocking off the area with crime tape.
