Local star helps defeat Serena, Venus Williams in doubles at Cincinnati Open

Matthew DietzMASON, Ohio —

Tennis legends Serena and Venus Williams took the court together at the Cincinnati Open on Monday night but it was a Mason native who helped steal the show from the sisters.

Playing together in doubles for the first time since 2022, Serena and Venus were defeated in a tiebreaker on Monday by Greater Cincinnati native Peyton Stearns and Marta Kostyuk.

The much-anticipated matchup was pushed back slightly due to weather but still drew a massive crowd at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

With the victory, Stearns and Kostyuk will move on to the next round of the doubles tournament, facing Hanyu Guo and Kristina Mladenovic.

The Williams sisters jumped out to a quick lead in the first set but went on to lose, 6-2. They bounced back in a major way in the second set, winning 6-1 to set up a 10-point tiebreaker to determine who moves on.

Stearns and Kostyuk were challenged but ultimately prevailed over Serena and Venus in front of a packed crowd on the Grandstand Court.
