CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WCYB) — Update: District Attorney Steve Finney said that 69-year-old John Benfield, of North Carolina, is charged with two counts of vehicle homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness.

He added that additional charges could be added. He is being booked in Carter County Detention Center.

Ballad Health released Wednesday evening that two patients are in stable condition and four are being treated in the surgical intensive care unit.

Ballad said that an event involving multiple trauma patients creates an immediate need for blood products.

Update: Milligan has identified the victims of the cycling team accident on Wednesday morning.

The school said that sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rodgers were killed.

They added that multiple other cyclists are “seriously injured” and ask to keep the Milligan community in your prayers.

Ballad Health CEO Alan Levine said Wednesday that members of the Milligan Cycling Team was involved in the crash that killed two people and injured multiple others.

Seven victims have been taken to Johnson City Medical Center.

Ballad Health issued the following statement:

“Ballad Health is deeply saddened by the tragic incident involving Milligan University cyclists who were struck by a vehicle in the Hampton area of Carter County this morning. Our prayers are with the victims, their families and everyone affected by this devastating event.

The Carter County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed that two people died at the scene, and others are being treated for injuries. At least one person is being transported by air to Johnson City Medical Center.

Trauma surgeons are at Johnson City Medical Center, and our teams are prepared to respond.

We are working closely with law enforcement and emergency response partners and will provide additional information as it becomes available.”
