According to Whitmire, nine new trucks will be out on routes starting on Monday of next week.

They’re the first of 31 new waste and recycling trucks the City is getting.

Whitmire said that in order to get the trucks out as quickly as possible, they won’t be painted. He also said that by not painting them, the City will save about $3,000 per vehicle.

In late July, the Houston City Council approved buying the Solid Waste Management department 31 new trucks.

“It’s a top priority for the City of Houston,” John Whitmire said last month.

KHOU 11 News has extensively reported on the citywide delays in trash and recycling collection. One of the problems the City said it has been dealing with over the past few months is older trucks going out of service, staff retirements, and old routes.

Solid Waste said it expects to have all of the new trucks the City purchased within the next few months.
