Former UK student pleads guilty to manslaughter in her baby’s death
LEXINGTON, Ky. —
A former University of Kentucky student has pleaded guilty in her baby’s death.
According to our CBS affiliate in Lexington, WKYT, Laken Snelling pleaded guilty Friday to first-degree manslaughter, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and concealing the birth of an infant.
Snelling was accused of hiding the birth and putting the baby’s body in a closet last year. The baby was discovered by her roommate.
An autopsy revealed the baby boy was born alive.
In court, WKYT says Snelling admitted to ending her baby’s life “instead of helping him,” and putting his body in a plastic bag.
She had just pleaded not guilty to manslaughter back in April.
Prosecutors recommended a 10-year sentence for manslaughter, a one-year sentence for abuse of a corpse, a one-year sentence for tampering with physical evidence and a 12-month sentence for concealing the birth of an infant.
The sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 16.
