The Washington Capitals are bringing another goaltender with NHL experience to this year’s training camp.

Washington announced Tuesday that Cal Petersen, formerly of the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers, will be joining the team for the preseason on a professional tryout agreement. The 31-year-old backstop has played in 106 career NHL games, most recently for the Flyers during the 2023-24 campaign.

Petersen, who is another rare right-catching goalie like Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren, spent the entire 2025-26 season in the AHL with the Iowa Wild. In 33 games, he posted a 13-16-2 record with a 2.73 goals-against average, a .896 save percentage, and four shutouts.

The Waterloo, Iowa native was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres but never signed with the team after attending the University of Notre Dame. He joined the Kings as a college free agent and played 101 games for the club from 2018 to 2023.

In his NHL career, Petersen is 46-44-10 with a 2.96 goals-against average, a .903 save percentage, and four shutouts. His last five-game stint in the league with the Flyers went poorly, as he recorded a 3.90 goals-against average and an .864 save percentage. Petersen was also the goaltender for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in their back-to-back playoff series losses to the Hershey Bears in 2024 and 2025.

While in the Kings organization, Petersen was teammates with current Capitals players Matt Roy and Jonny Brodzinski. He also joined Roy on Team USA at the 2021 World Championship, and later shared a locker room with Alex Tuch at the 2023 World Championship.

Petersen will be one of at least five netminders at Washington’s camp this fall, joining Thompson, Lindgren, Clay Stevenson, and Mitch Gibson.

His arrival comes as the Capitals will have to place both Stevenson and Gibson on NHL waivers if they wish for them to start the season in AHL Hershey. Stevenson has previously drawn interest from other NHL teams regarding a waiver claim and is coming off an impressive four-game stint with the Caps this past year, going 3-1-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage.
