The City of Manitowoc will break ground on the land of a former cookware factory.
City officials, members of the EPA, and the crew from the Gorman Company will put shovels in the ground for what will be the Maritime Lofts on the Washington Street side of the former Mirro Property.
The groundbreaking takes place at 10:30 this morning and will transform the long-vacant property into quality housing for families and individuals earning between 30 and 80% of the median income.
Starting back in 1909, the Mirro Aluminum Company began making aluminum cookware and employed many in Manitowoc for decades.
The company closed its Manitowoc corporate office in 2003.
After the factory was demolished, the land sat vacant and required environmental cleanup.
The Clipper City received federal funding from the U.S. EPA to clean up the land before the new apartment complex was announced.
