George Lombard Jr., the New York Yankees’ rookie shortstop, left the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader after three innings with right knee discomfort. The team announced the injury during the game and said Lombard was leaving Yankee Stadium for imaging at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
Lombard was batting against Brayan Bello of the Boston Red Sox when he twisted his knee on a second-inning fastball that veered inside. The ball did not hit Lombard, but he asked for time after the awkward movement.
He grimaced and hopped out of the box on his left foot, then grabbed at his knee and flexed it with a trainer before staying in the game and singling to left on the next pitch.
“Just felt a little something in his knee when he took that swing,” manager Aaron Boone told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on the Fox telecast. “We’ll kind of monitor him right now; obviously good enough to stay in right now.”

Lombard stayed in for defense in the top of the third and batted again in the bottom of the inning, flying out to left. But Boone removed him from the lineup before the top of the fourth, shifting José Caballero to shortstop and bringing in Amed Rosario to play third base.
Lombard, 21, had played every inning since joining the Yankees on Aug. 4, after the team refused to part with him at the trade deadline. He is hitting .253/.310/.367 with two home runs and seven errors in 23 games.
