The Montreal Canadiens reportedly made several attempts to work the trade market.
Kent Hughes really tried to move Samuel Montembeault. Without success, according to Louis Jean.”The Canadiens did everything they could to trade him, but they weren’t able to find a taker. Kent Hughes wanted to be more active than he was able to be. What he was offered for Samuel Montembeault wasn’t good enough for him.
That’s why he’s still here.”

Canadiens left waiting as Kent Hughes holds firm on Samuel Montembeault’s trade value
In other words, Kent Hughes reportedly wanted to be more active with this situation, but the offers he received didn’t match the value he places on the goaltender.
Did other teams basically want to acquire Montembeault for free?
Louis Jean had believed at the end of last season that Montembeault would never wear a Montreal Canadiens jersey again.
But the plan appears to have changed, or at the very least, the messaging has changed.
The Quebec goaltender remains in the organization, almost by default, while the Canadiens wait for a satisfactory offer to come along.
According to Louis Jean, everything remains possible: carrying three goaltenders in Montreal, or sending Jacob Fowler back to Laval.
He also pointed out that Samuel Montembeault wasn’t in shape at the last training camp, potentially because of a playoff injury that affected his preparation.
At this point, all that’s left is to hope Montembeault bounces back and has an excellent 2026-2027 season.
