The University of Michigan reached a $1.2 million settlement last month with a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by a former Michigan football staffer, according to a copy of the settlement agreement obtained Tuesday by The Athletic.
The staffer, LaTroy Lewis, was a graduate assistant at Michigan in 2024 when the alleged assault occurred. He was fired from his position as an assistant defensive line coach with the Atlanta Falcons in February after the allegations became public.
The Ann Arbor Police Department opened an investigation and named Lewis as a suspect after the woman reported the alleged assault in February. Police made multiple attempts to schedule a follow-up interview with the woman but were unsuccessful, according to a copy of the police report obtained Tuesday by The Athletic. The report states the case was “closed due to inactivity” but could be “re-opened at any time.”
The woman’s allegations came to light amid an investigation of the culture and practices of Michigan’s athletic department conducted by the law firm Jenner & Block following the firing of football coach Sherrone Moore. The woman contacted Jenner & Block in December 2025, shortly after Michigan fired Moore for engaging in a relationship with his executive assistant.
Michigan agreed to pay the woman $848,000, with the remaining $352,000 going to her lawyer, according to the settlement, which was first reported by the Detroit Free Press late last week. The university did not admit liability, and both sides agreed to keep the details confidential.
The woman’s lawyer, Karen Truszkowski, did not return calls seeking comment. The University of Michigan and a lawyer who represented Lewis also did not return requests for comment. Lawyer Fabiola A. Galguera previously said Lewis “intends to fiercely fight these false allegations.”
The Jenner & Block investigation uncovered weaknesses in reporting and accountability but no “widespread misconduct” in Michigan’s athletic department, according to a public summary released by the university in July. Following the investigation, Michigan negotiated a $7.1 million separation agreement with athletic director Warde Manuel, who will step down at the end of the year.
The woman told police she connected with Lewis on the dating app Bumble and met him in December 2024 at an Ann Arbor hotel, where the alleged assault occurred, according to the police report. Police redacted details, but the report states that the “suspect overpowered the victim, held her down, and assaulted her,” resulting in bruising and bleeding.
The woman told police she used Snapchat audio to report the alleged assault to a “mandated reporter” whose name and title are redacted from the police report. Her lawyer previously said she reported the incident to Moore, an assertion Moore’s lawyer denied. The report notes that Lewis called the woman 16 times after she reported the alleged assault.
The woman told police that she began an online relationship with Lewis in July 2024, and that he began threatening her in October of that year, roughly two months before their first in-person meeting, according to the report. The officer who took the report observed a message in which Lewis “threatened to beat her up and kill her” and noted that Lewis also sent the woman unsolicited videos of him having sex with other women.
Police attempted to schedule a follow-up interview with the woman in March, but her lawyer said she was “very triggered right now due to the stress of everything” and not ready to meet, according to the report. Police subsequently closed the investigation.
In the wake of the Jenner & Block report, Michigan said it would enact several recommendations to strengthen its compliance and human resources offices and improve its policies for reporting and investigating allegations of misconduct.
Michigan’s board of regents voted Tuesday to appoint C. Cybele Raver, formerly provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Vanderbilt, as the university’s next president. Raver will begin her presidency Dec. 1 and will hire Michigan’s next athletic director.
