With their lead for the final AL wild-card spot down to a half-game, the Cleveland Guardians open a 4-game series with the Detroit Tigers on Friday afternoon

The Cleveland Guardians (70-70) dropped back to .500 with a loss on Thursday and saw its lead for the third American League wild-card position cut to a half-game over both the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays. On Friday, the Guardians open a four-game series at Progressive Field in Cleveland with the first game of a day-night doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers (64-75) in the makeup of a June 14 postponement. Cleveland remains three games back of the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central with four losses in its last six games on the heels of a seven-game winning streak that propelled it into the top three in the wild-card chase.

Cleveland led 1-0 early before the visiting Toronto Blue Jays pushed across four runs in the top of the fifth on Thursday, going on to a 6-3 victory. Tanner Bibee took his MLB-leading 15th loss, allowing five runs on four hits and five walks in four innings. Ángel Genao gave the Guardians the lead with an RBI single in the third and Austin Hedges banged out a two-run single in the fifth.

Detroit salvaged the finale of a three-game series at the Minnesota Twins, taking an 11-6 victory in 12 innings on Wednesday night. Spencer Torkelson led off the top of the 12th with a two-run home run and Javier Báez added insurance with a bases-clearing double later in the inning. The Tigers led 5-2 before the Twins tied the game with three runs in the eighth. John Peck got the first two hits of his career in the game, driving in three runs and Max Clark had a three-hit game that included a go-ahead RBI double in the 11th.

Left-hander Logan Allen makes his second start of the season for the Guardians in the opener, coming in with a 3.77 ERA and 1.465 WHIP in 14.1 innings over six appearances to go with 15 strikeouts. The Tigers give the ball to right-hander Keider Montero (9-8), who enters with a 3.24 ERA and 0.993 WHIP over 139 innings in 28 appearances and 22 starts.
