From Dorchester to the WNBA: September 4th declared as ‘Taina Mair Day’ in Boston
BOSTON —
For Seattle Storm guard and Dorchester native Taina Mair, there truly is no place like home.
A huge part of Mair’s basketball foundation was laid at Roxbury Prep Middle School, where she was welcomed home to on Friday.
“This is where the seed began to get watered,” said Mair.
That led to a full ride at Boston College, an impactful three years at Duke University, and eventually, the 14th overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.
State Representative Chris Worrell presented an official State House citation, and Boston City Councilor Brian Worrell presented a proclamation, declaring September 4 “Taina Mair Day” in the city of Boston.
“I am so grateful,” said Mair. “I don’t even have the words to describe it.”
For Mair, it is bigger than basketball. She wants her journey to inspire the youth in whatever path they choose.
“No kid has to be exactly like me,” said Mair. “Everyone’s journey is different. But to be able to get out of Boston and see whatever you want to see, be whatever you want to be. And just grow into a person and be a great human being in this world is something I hope these kids take away.”
