WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — President Donald Trump wants his Palm Beach County golf course to become a permanent presidential institution available to current and future presidents, regardless of political party.
Trump International Golf Club West Palm Beach sits on county-owned land, and Trump’s attorney, Harvey Oyer III, recently asked Palm Beach County commissioners to consider a proposal that would designate the course as a U.S. Presidential Golf Course.
The proposal envisions the property being used by past, current and future presidents, as well as visiting foreign heads of state. It would also include dedicated presidential lodging.
Palm Beach County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo confirmed the county is exploring the idea, calling it a potentially “remarkable and historic opportunity” for the community.

“Communities across America compete for the honor of hosting presidential libraries because of the history, prestige and economic impact that comes with becoming a permanent part of the American presidency,” Abruzzo said.
Abruzzo said the proposed golf course could be similarly unique because it would remain operational and serve presidents from both political parties.
He pointed to the course’s location on county-owned land next to Palm Beach International Airport, as well as existing security infrastructure, as factors that could make the site suited for the proposal.
“President Trump’s willingness to make this significant private investment and create a Presidential institution intended to serve his successors and our country for generations is an extraordinary act of generosity and vision,” Abruzzo said.
The Trump family owns the golf club, while the property sits on land leased from Palm Beach County under the terms of a settlement involving the airport.
Abruzzo said county administration will work under the direction of the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners as officials examine what the proposal could mean for the community and work with Trump’s team and appropriate federal agencies.
“This likely would further cement Palm Beach County’s place on the national and international stage for generations to come,” Abruzzo said.
The proposal remains subject to further review and discussions with the county and federal officials.
