Week 1 is almost in the books, and Saturday turned out to be more dramatic than it looked on paper. For most teams around the country, it took some time to get rolling, but that wasn’t the case for No. 1 Ohio State and No. 5 Texas.

In Columbus, Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith picked up right where they left off last season in a 56-3 beatdown of Ball State. Sayin threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns while Smith reeled in eight receptions for 151 yards and a pair of scores.

Down in Austin, Texas, clobbered Texas State 59-7 behind a sparkling performance from Arch Manning and the Longhorns’ offense. Manning piled up 305 passing yards and four scores while Cam Coleman (three catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns) and Hollywood Smothers (98 total yards and a touchdown) delivered on the hype.

Now, Ohio State and Texas will prepare for their marquee matchup in Austin next weekend. Based on what we saw Saturday, there should be fireworks galore.

Outside of those two teams — and perhaps No. 3 Georgia — it was hard to find another team that rolled into the 2026 season with no hiccups on Saturday. No. 2 Oregon shook off a slow start in a comeback victory over Boise State, and No. 13 Alabama had to shake off some rust before rolling against East Carolina.

At the end of the night, No. 16 Michigan beat Western Michigan 13-12 on a Hail Mary pass on the game’s final play after the officiating crew put one second back on the clock. JJ Buchanan reeled in the 47-yard winner from Bryce Underwood to lift the Wolverines to a controversial victory that left the college football world buzzing.
