The northern lights could be visible this week. Here’s where

(CNN) – The northern lights may make an appearance this week in, well, the north.

People in Alaska and mostly states that border Canada might get a view of the aurora.

The coronal masses that are ejected from the sun and responsible for the show are most likely to hit Earth overnight Monday or Tuesday.

The lights can frequently be seen with the naked eye.

But auroras that look faint will often show vivid colors in photographs, even taken from a smartphone.

Aurora activity tends to be more common around the equinoxes due to the orientation of Earth’s magnetic field.
