SAN JOSE – A 48-year-old Azerbaijan national and former Sunnyvale resident pleaded guilty Tuesday to three counts of health care fraud in connection with a multi-million-dollar scheme targeting Medicare Advantage programs, according to authorities.
Sevindik Huseynov served as CEO of Vonyes Inc., a durable medical equipment company based in Sunnyvale, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release.
In pleading guilty, Huseynov admitted to aiding and abetting a scheme to submit thousands of bogus claims to Medicare Advantage organizations between January 2025 and June 2025, according to authorities.
The claims were submitted on behalf of unsuspecting beneficiaries, authorities said, adding that the claims sought $137 million in reimbursement for medical equipment that was not provided, not needed by patients and not authorized by a provider.
Huseynov admitted to receiving reimbursement checks for $2.8 million and depositing those checks in Vonyes bank accounts he set up, according to authorities. After the money was deposited, he wired most of it to bank accounts in Hong Kong.
A federal grand jury indicted Huseynov on Sept. 25, 2025.
Huseynov faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on Feb. 2, 2027, authorities said. He remains in federal custody.
