ROANOKE, Va. – Roanoke City Officials announced Wednesday that the city council unanimously approved an $8 million purchase of 236 acres of property associated with the former Ole Monterey Golf Course.
“Advancing priority projects requires having developable land available,” said City Manager Valmarie H. Turner. “Investing in land for housing, schools, and/or industrial development is an investment in Roanoke’s future.”
Officials say the city is considering several potential uses for the land, including a Roanoke City Public Schools Campus, a housing development, parks and recreation facilities and technology to support future manufacturing and industrial development.
“With the purchase of this land,” said Mayor Joe Cobb. “We’ve creating opportunities to advance our city’s long-term growth, invest in the academic achievement of our children, and address housing challenges.”
The old golf course property is being purchased free and clear of all liens and encumbrances. The purchase was based on negotiations with the property owner.
“The acquisition provides the City with an opportunity to expand our assets in many key areas,” said Marc Nelson, Director of Economic Development. “We immediately recognized it as critical to the future development of our city.”
The 236 acre-property, sold by Valley Lands Inc., is located along Tinker Creek Lane NE and includes three parcels at 1112 Tinker Creek Lane NE and 0 Tinker Creek Lane NE.
