SOUTH PORTLAND (WGME) — The air quality in South Portland and Portland is leaving some residents exposed to toxin levels that are exceeding Maine’s air guidelines.

But there’s no need to panic.

According to its latest report, the Maine CDC says residents’ exposure to the current concentration of the toxins acrolein and benzene is unlikely to cause lasting health effects.

This air quality is similar to other Maine communities as well, like Bangor, Lewiston and Rumford.

The report comes after South Portland residents raised concerns over Citgo’s petroleum tanks’ impact on the air quality.

The tanks are located just off the Casco Bay Bridge and release small amounts of fuel vapors during transfers.

State officials will hold a public meeting at the South Portland High School next month to discuss the report and answer questions.
