According to royal commentators, a misstep by Harry during an earlier sit-down with Charles could have prevented this current friction.
Expert believes Prince Harry should have addressed UK return during King Charles meeting in July
The controversy stemmed from the letter sent by the palace clarifying the working status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. It has been seen as an attempt to draw clear lines between working and non-working royals. Discussing the fallout, royal experts on Times Radio suggested the timing traced back to a private meeting between Harry and King Charles. The entire Sussex family met Charles and Queen Camilla at the King’s residence in Highgrove in July.
“I think the slight error possibly on Harry’s side is that when he came in July and had that lovely meeting… I think it might have been a slight mistake to have not discussed the fact [with King Charles] that he was thinking about moving back to the UK in a few weeks,” royal editor Roya Nikkhah noted. She added that the sudden relocation has “taken the Palace by surprise” and left the king needing to issue clarification.
The commentator noted that a longer and more transparent lead-up to the move might have eased tensions. Nikkhah said that had there been “a little bit more of a run up to think about it, we might not be in this situation now.” The Sunday Times editor also pointed to unresolved questions around security. A review by the relevant Home Office body is reportedly underway.
Despite the palace’s attempt to formally distinguish Harry and Meghan’s status, the experts note that the couple will still be visibly active in the UK. They will continue their engagements for causes including WellChild and the Invictus Games in the coming weeks. The panel also noted that despite the palace’s guidelines, it will be difficult for the public to differentiate between “working” and “non-working” royals as the Sussexes are still “very much” part of the royal family.
