A champion will be crowned on Saturday in New York. The top two seeds in the women’s draw — and top two players in the world — battle it out at Arthur Ashe Stadium looking to earn a grand slam title. No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka takes on No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina in the championship match.
Sabalenka is looking for her third straight US Open title after mowing down the competition. She has dropped just one set in the tournament — in the quarterfinals against Linda Noskova where it was pushed to a third set tiebreak — and the rest of the sets haven’t been particularly close.
Rybakina, meanwhile, has been pushed to three sets in her last two matches — against Coco Gauff and Qinwen Zheng. The two have met a remarkable 17 times in their careers with Sabalenka holding a slight edge at 10-7. They’ve met three times this season with Sabalenka taking two of those, but Rybakina taking the most important one: the Australian Open final.
There’s also an interesting subplot to this match with Rybakina set to take over the world No. 1 ranking at the end of the tournament. Sabalenka has held that spot for 99 straight weeks, but no grand slam wins in the first three saw her slip down a bit in the overall points.
