LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — The Raven Ridge Wildlife Center is offering advice to pet owners after a baby chipmunk was brought in to their volunteers.

Volunteers said they received a call Friday from a local woman after her dog had reportedly brought a baby chipmunk to her.

The chipmunk was thin and emaciated, and as a result has been receiving formula in critical care, volunteers said.

Because of the condition of the animal, volunteers said they believe something might have happened to its mother.

Finding a tiny, eyes-closed baby chipmunk wandering above ground usually indicates that it is orphaned or that its nest has been destroyed, as they do not leave their underground burrow until they are 6 to 8 weeks old.

They also cautioned cat and dog owners, saying that if a pet has attacked or is seen with a wild animal, that animal needs to be brought to a wildlife rehabilitator, as it may be suffering from puncture wounds or internal damage.

Volunteers said the chipmunk has been in their care for roughly 24 hours, and has since made great progress.
