SEATTLE — So let me get this straight.
In less than a month, the Mariners achieved (or had happen to them) by margin of victory/defeat the following:
August 18: Worst loss in franchise history, 22-0 at MilwaukeeAugust 23: Worst home loss in franchise history, 19-2 vs. the CubsSeptember 12: Best win in franchise history, 19-1 at the A’s.
If that doesn’t sum up the story of the 2026 Mariners, I’m not sure what does.
Yes, the M’s were brilliant Saturday night; Bryan Woo got it started on the mound and all the batters were hot.
Dominic Canzone, Randy Arozarena, J.P. Crawford, Cole Young and Michael Arroyo all hit home runs.
And, with that youth movement on display, you couldn’t help but feel positively about the franchise’s future.
Even if this year things don’t look great.
While it would be the most 2026 Mariners thing ever to go on a run now, the odds remain quite slim. Seattle is five games out of a playoff spot with just 13 games to play.
Even with a light remaining schedule, including road trips at the Angels and Rockies, a lot would have to go right.
But I guess that happened Saturday?
If nothing else, it is a reminder of what this team is capable of. While in the moment it’s probably pretty frustrating (How many M’s fans were watching from home saying, “Where has THAT been all season!?”)
It’s remarkable, really, in this celebrated 50th season of Mariners baseball, three records of the same nature all came crashing down within a month.
Yes, it does truly encapsulate what a wild year it’s been.
Perhaps, too, it’s an indicator of what the final 13 games will bring as well.
