Magdalena Frech vs Caroline Dolehide
Head-to-Head: first meeting
2024 WTA Guadalajara champion Magdalena Frech is off to a great start, losing just five games against Nao Hibino in the first round. Frech has played some great tennis since Wimbledon, but the results haven’t gone in her favour. She has come up against big names early in the tournaments, but that won’t be the case at least in the second round here. Caroline Dolehide is a former finalist here and is a solid player at her best. However, Frech is in better form and should win this match.
Prediction: Frech in 3
Liudmila Samsonova vs Kayla Day
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Liudmila Samsonova defeated Elsa Jacquemot in straight sets, but it was not straightforward. Samsonova was down triple set points in the first-set tiebreak and got lucky on one of those set points, as she mishit two shots that landed inside the court. Samsonova will be looking for an improvement in her level in the second round. Kayla Day got a good win against Elvina Kalieva, but she has only one win against a top-50 opponent on this surface, and I think Samsonova’s ranking and experience will help her prevail.

Iva Jovic vs Zeynep Sonmez

Defending champion Iva Jovic will start her campaign with a tough match against her good friend Zeynep Sonmez, who put up a dominant display in the first round. Jovic has improved a lot as a player since her title win here and is coming off a solid US Open. Both players will give their all on the court, but Jovic is the better player right now, and I expect her game to be too solid for Sonmez.

Marta Kostyuk vs Taylor Townsend
Head-to-Head: Kostyuk 2-0 Townsend
Taylor Townsend recovered brilliantly after losing the first set against Tatjana Maria and has set up an intriguing clash against top seed Marta Kostyuk. Townsend is enjoying the best singles season of her career and has held her own against top players. Kostyuk is without a doubt one of the in-form players on tour, but she will have to be careful here. The American’s lefty game and recent confidence will help her, but I will back the top seed to raise her level and win.
