Few would have imagined that Spieth would end the season without a single top-10 on the PGA Tour. The Texan failed to make it past the first FedEx Cup playoff event for the third year in a row.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy have won five majors between them since the last time Spieth finished one of the four biggest events of the year inside the top-10. Meanwhile, his most recent victory came back in 2022.
Spieth had been dealing with a wrist injury for a long time, and it did appear that the 2025 season was a tentative step in the right direction after he had got the problem dealt with once and for all. However, this year has been underwhelming, with the 33-year-old not even in the conversation to be an outside pick to make the Presidents Cup team.
Colt Knost calls for Jordan Spieth to be more of an artist
Some of those around the PGA Tour seemingly hope that there is still an opportunity for Spieth to rediscover some better form. But he will have to be willing to change his approach.
Speaking on Fried Egg Golf, Colt Knost called for Spieth to play a much more natural game given what he is capable of when he needs to get himself out of a terrible position.
“Disappointing? I’m going to say Jordan Spieth once again. I don’t know what’s going on. I know he had the injury. He just cannot put it together. To not have any top-10s when you’re Jordan Spieth for the season on the PGA Tour is just shocking to me,” he said.

“I thought this was really going to be a big year for Jordan because he was finally healthy, but the ball-striking just hasn’t been what it is. I know the putter normally goes with age, which I would love for someone to do a study on that and really figure out why we start freaking out the older we get over short putts. I know how good Jordan Spieth is, we all do. There’s a reason he was called the golden child early in his career, and won so many majors so fast, but it just drives me nuts not seeing him in contention more often.
“It just amazes me when he gets in trouble, which he does a lot off the tee, there’s no swing thoughts, and he hits some of the miraculous shots of anybody on the planet. It’s Seve-like. But there’s no thought. He’s just an artist. He’s always been an artist.
“That’s why he putts the greens of Augusta National so well. He got locked in there for several years with the green reading books, and I’m like, ‘dude, the best you putt all year is at Augusta National, and they don’t have them or allow them there. You just let the artist come out in you’. And I wish he would do that with the full swing more often.”
Jordan Spieth has been encouraged to speak with a different coach
Spieth has seemingly kept the majority of the same team around him throughout his career. He continues to have Michael Greller on the bag, while Cameron McCormick has been his coach for more than two decades.
Plenty of players have benefitted from changing coaches over the years. And while Knost does not necessarily think that Spieth needs to go that far, he does believe that there is a need for a fresh voice.
“Him and Cameron McCormick have been great together. He’s been with him forever, but at some point, and this is not disrespecting Cameron, this is just I want to see what Jordan Spieth can do because I know it’s in there, maybe go get a second opinion on the golf swing. Take Cameron with you, and let’s just spend a couple of hours with somebody else and see if maybe something they say hits different and comes through, and they find something that can get Jordan Spieth back to the ball-striker he was,” he said.
It is hard to imagine Spieth’s playing style changing any time soon. He has changed so little over the years, and if he feels that he is close to finding something, then he is unlikely to deviate from his current path.
As Knost notes, that is frustrating for fans of his, because the belief in Spieth’s powers is waning fast. It should not be forgotten that next year will mark 10 years since his most recent major victory.
