(KWTX) – A new school year comes with excitement and sometimes anxiety.
This school year, Texas students and staff are adjusting to new laws such as the cell phone ban. Different districts have various policies from turning it off and storing it in a backpack to locking it up in a Yondr pouch during school hours.
Dr. Kristy Donaldson, a licensed professional counselor, tell us she often hears of people now having anxiety over having a conversation on the phone.
She encourages early planning to set up a routine for students and parents to adjust to the new normal of not having access to cell phones.
She also says to look at it in a different light by finding new interests: such as drawing, journaling and creative projects.
“We know that cell phones do not promote overall wellbeing and so being able to put those down for a while could be a really strong move in the right direction where students and staff and families can come back together,” Dr. Donaldson says.
Throughout the school year KWTX is going to follow the different policies set forth by the school districts and look into how effective they are.
