Birmingham Museum of Art showcases 200 years of Black American art in new exhibit
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
The Birmingham Museum of Art is showcasing 200 years of Black American art in a new exhibit featuring works from the museum’s permanent collection.
“Roll Call: Two Hundred Years of Black American Art” includes pieces by more than 250 Black American artists. The museum acquired its first piece for the collection in 1971.
The exhibit includes a variety of mediums, including photography, paintings and sculptures.
“The BMA strives to collect works that represent our city, the visitors that we want to feel welcome at the museum, but also just continue to tell stories that haven’t been historically told at the museum,” said Interim Director Chantal Drake. “We want people to feel seen and we want them to understand perspectives. All of the perspectives of the Black lived experience here in this country, and this exhibition does just that.”
The exhibit opens at 10 a.m. Sept. 24 and will be on display through Jan. 17.
