The first district championship of the 2026 fall sports season begins Wednesday, and history could be made in the WPIAL girls tennis singles tournament.
Shady Side Academy senior Meriwether McCargo is the top seed in the Class 3A bracket as she hopes to become the first player to win four straight WPIAL titles in the highest classification in girls tennis.
In the 53-year history of the event, Gretchen Rush of Mt. Lebanon (1978, ‘79 and ‘81), Kelly Kolankiewicz of Mt. Lebanon (1982-84), Sarah Riske of Peters Township (1995 and ‘97-‘98), Michaela Kissell of Latrobe (2003-05) and Ronit Yurovsky of Plum (2009-11) have all won three WPIAL Class 3A championships, but no one has won four.
Laura Greb of Knoch is the only tennis player to win four WPIAL singles titles, claiming four Class 2A crowns from 2017-20.
McCargo claimed district Class 3A gold in 2023, 2024 and again last fall.
A new Class 2A winner will be crowned this week after Gabriella Dusi graduated from Belle Vernon after winning a third straight title in 2025.
Quaker Valley junior Avery Allan is the top seed in the Class 2A bracket. She will receive a first-round bye.
The Class 3A first round, second round and quarterfinals are at North Allegheny on Wednesday while the first three rounds of the 2A bracket are at Bethel Park.
