TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A fit of rage caught on camera. The target: the Bedford Hills Golf Club sign.
Security cameras captured a person jabbing a stop sign into the light-up sign at the entrance of the golf club, on Jackman Road in Michigan.
Now, workers like Ed Mitchell, the golf course superintendent, are left confused.
“Why did he decide to pick Bedford Hills?” Mitchell said.
Mitchell said when staff got to work the morning of September 12, things weren’t as they left them. He said the gate was broken and a sign previously hanging was on the ground.
So, the team checked the security cameras.
Just before 1:30 a.m., video shows a silver truck come down Jackman and turn into the course using the exit, then drive up to the locked gate.
The driver, who appears to be a man, is seen getting out of the truck, rip a sign off the gate, then throw it.
A couple minutes later, the individual is seen walking toward the exit with what appears to be a stop sign and jabs the light-up screen out front multiple times.
Shortly after, the vandal trades the traffic sign for their fists and pounds the screen.
They also appear to remove another stop sign from the ground and throw it in their truck.
For their final act they take the first stop sign, launch it back at the screen, then drive off.
“I’ve been in this industry 30+ years and this one takes the cake,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell said the team doesn’t recognize this individual or their truck. They’re hoping by sharing the video, someone with recognize something. They’re even offering a 2027 membership to those who identify this suspect.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating this case. A spokesperson earlier this week said they couldn’t say if this was a random or targeted attack. They added the quality of the security video hindered their ability to get leads.
As for the screen, there is damage. Mitchell said it they can’t fix it, it’ll be around $20,000 to replace.
“With prices going up … we’re trying to make golf as affordable as possible,” Mitchell said. He added it’ll be another cost added to the budget.
Moving forward, employees hope customers stick to hitting golf balls, instead of their property.
