GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Pitt County health officials say another rabid raccoon has been reported in Greenville, the second since April.
Friday, health officials say animal services reported a positive rabies test in a raccoon picked up near East 10th Street and Brownlea Drive.
This comes 10 days after a stray cat tested positive for rabies in Pitt County.
Officials say animal services is not aware of any human or animal that made contact with the rabid animal. They are also reminding the public of the importance of giving wild animals space, as any mammal can spread rabies.
“Give unfamiliar or ill animals space and keep your pets’ vaccinations current,” Pitt County Health Director Wes Gray says. “Do not attempt to catch or approach any wild animal.”
If people see any animals they think may have rabies, they should contact animal services so they can test them for rabies.
Back in April, the health department says a rabid raccoon in Greenville encountered two dogs near Elm Street. About two weeks later, a rabid fox was also reported in Pitt County.
