Ravens survive trip to Rio with last-second 34-31 win over Cowboys

Ravens kicker Tyler Loop nails 56-yard game winner as time expired

Blair YoungRIO DE JANEIRO, RJ —

It was a career-defining moment for Tyler Loop as he won the game for the Ravens with a 56-yard field goal as time expired to give the Ravens a 34-31 win over the Cowboys.

It was the perfect way for the team to end the historic trip as they finished the first NFL game in Rio de Janeiro with a hard-fought win. The entire stadium believed the game was heading to overtime after Dallas drove down the field to tie the game at 31. But seven seconds was all Lamar Jackson needed to find Zay Flowers deep over the middle with enough time to get a timeout called with one second left.

Loop would come up with the biggest kick of his career, in what must have felt like redemption, after missing a chance to send the Ravens to the playoffs last season. He would be mobbed by his teammates to end the game in what must have been a great feeling for the second-year kicker. The 56-yarder is one short of his career-best 57-yarder he made in Week 1.

The fourth quarter was packed with too many big plays to keep track of. It started with what looked like a Ravens scoring drive, but after a Derrick Henry touchdown was overturned, the Cowboys stuffed Henry on a fourth-and-goal. They would answer with a 96-yard touchdown drive to take a 28-24 lead.

Both teams would go three-and-out on their next drives, giving the Ravens a chance to take a late lead in the fourth quarter. They went on an 11-play, 64-yard drive that ended with rookie tight end Matt Hibner’s first touchdown. The Ravens allowed too much time for Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott, who led them into field goal range in a short amount of time.

The Cowboys were helped by a controversial defensive pass interference call on Nate Wiggins that set them up at the goal line. The replay showed that Wiggins was actually grabbed by the receiver, and maybe the call should have gone the other way. The Ravens defense answered with two big stops that forced the Cowboys to settle for a field goal and the tie.

With only seven seconds left, most would feel comfortable that the game would be heading to overtime. Luckily for the Ravens, Flowers was able to get down in time for a timeout to be called to set up Loop’s game-winning kick.
