BRIGANTINE, N.J. (WPVI) — Residents in Brigantine spent Sunday assessing damage left behind by a weekend nor’easter after floodwaters receded and winds began to calm.

Many residents said streets and yards were submerged during the storm.

Along the city’s promenade, several ramps collapsed, including one that has been blocked off. Rough surf continued to pound the shoreline, striking rocks that residents said were once covered by sand.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said the area experienced significant beach and dune erosion during the storm.

For longtime residents, the damage was difficult to see.

“It’s upsetting to see this because this used to be my beach that I would come to, and now that there’s really not much here. It’s upsetting to see,” Emma Walsh of Brigantine said.

Others expressed hope that recovery efforts would restore the shoreline.

“Hopefully they can get everything cleaned up and we can restore the balance we had beforehand, but there is definitely some devastation. Everywhere I’ve seen recently has been flooded,” said Ethan Pachelli of Absecon.

Residents said public works crews have already begun cleanup efforts, which are expected to continue throughout the week.

Action News reached out to Brigantine’s mayor for additional information about cleanup operations and we are awaiting a response.
