The adaptation of John Steinbeck’s literary masterpiece took center stage at the Plaza Hotel’s New York premiere. The Netflix series offers a fresh interpretation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, East of Eden, shifting its focus to the story’s antihero, Cathy Ames.
In the titular role of Ames, Florence Pugh stars in the series with an ensemble featuring Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada, and Joe Anders.
Zoe Kazan serves as the writer, co-showrunner and executive producer, alongside co-showrunner and executive producer Jeb Stuart. Kazan’s grandfather directed the 1955 film adaptation of the novel, East of Eden, starring James Dean in his first major leading role.
Steinbeck’s classic is an epic multigenerational saga set in California’s Salinas Valley between the American Civil War and World War I. At its core, the novel is a modern retelling of the Biblical story of Cain and Abel, exploring free will, parental rejection, and the eternal battle between good and evil.
