The season came to an end Wednesday for the Sturgeon Bay girls golf team in the WIAA Division 2 regional at the Irish Waters Golf Club in Freedom.
The Clippers finished fourth out of nine teams with a score of 441, 61 strokes behind the third and final team qualifier for the sectional.
“While the season has come to an end, the girls can look back on a successful season filled with improvement and growth,” said Sturgeon Bay head coach Michael Bryfczynski. “Throughout the year, the team continued to move up the conference rankings, improve its scores and set personal bests.”
Seymour (347) won the regional team title, followed by Marinette (375) and Freedom (380) as the three sectional qualifiers.
Individually, Seymour junior Lyla Schueler and Freedom senior Kay Lee McClintock tied for the top score of 78 for 18 holes. Besides players on the top-three teams all qualifying for the sectional, two golfers not on those three teams also advanced to the sectional as individual qualifiers – Amherst junior Kinzee Martin (91) and Oconto Falls sophomore Riley Borkovec (95).
Sturgeon Bay’s top finisher, senior Hayden Montevideo, ended up 11 strokes behind the final individual qualifier at 106. Clippers sophomore Maggie Huemphner finished a stroke behind Montevideo at 107.
The other two Sturgeon Bay golfers whose scores counted toward the team total included sophomore Kennedy Hoernke (109) and senior Talia Schmidt (119).
“It has been exciting to watch this group grow both as golfers and as a team, and their progress throughout the season gives the program plenty to look forward to in the future,” Bryfczynski said.
