Why today’s game matters
The first-round series between the Dallas Wings and Golden State Valkyries has delivered two dramatically different games, setting the stage for a decisive Game 3 on Friday night in San Francisco. The series is tied 1-1 after Golden State’s 104-80 victory in Game 1 and Dallas’ 108-100 overtime win in Game 2.
The Valkyries looked dominant in the opener, breaking the game open with a 37-11 second quarter and finishing 18 of 36 from 3-point range. Cecilia Zandalasini scored 22 points, Gabby Williams added 20, and Golden State committed only four turnovers in the 24-point rout.
Dallas responded behind a historic performance from Arike Ogunbowale. After scoring only 10 points in Game 1, Ogunbowale erupted for a WNBA playoff-record 45 points in Game 2, shooting 12-for-23 from the field and knocking down five 3-pointers. Her off-balance 3-pointer late in regulation helped force overtime and kept the Wings’ season alive.
Game 3 also features a matchup between two of the WNBA’s brightest stars. Paige Bueckers averaged 20.9 points and 5.9 assists during the regular season, while Williams led the Valkyries with 36 points, seven assists and six rebounds in Wednesday’s loss.
The key matchup may be Golden State’s perimeter defense against Ogunbowale. If the Valkyries can avoid another explosive scoring night, they’ll have an opportunity to advance. If Dallas receives another dominant offensive performance, the underdog Wings could complete an upset on the road.
