The Climb raises awareness about maternal mental health in Nebraska

Organizers say more resources and connections to care are needed for families across the state

Connor SchmidtOMAHA, Neb. —

Families, mental health professionals and community organizations gathered at Zorinsky Lake Park Saturday for The Climb, an annual event focused on raising awareness about maternal and perinatal mental health.

The event is organized by the Nebraska chapter of Postpartum Support International. Organizers say The Climb gives families an opportunity to learn about mental health resources while reminding parents and loved ones they are not alone.

Meghan Luebbert, chair of The Climb and a psychiatric nurse practitioner, said the event is designed for everyone, including mothers, fathers, children, family members, friends and mental health providers.

Organizers also highlighted challenges in connecting Nebraska families with specialized care.

Emily Goodman, founder of the Nebraska chapter and its current education co-chair, said about 24,000 babies are born in Nebraska each year. She said 232 professionals have received specialized certification through Postpartum Support International, including about 135 behavioral health providers.

Goodman said Nebraska also does not have a formalized or standardized referral system for people who may need additional treatment after a mental health screening.

The Climb is the Nebraska chapter’s largest fundraiser. Organizers say continued participation and fundraising help expand mental health education, screening and resources for families across the state.
