ZACHARY, La. (WAFB) – A medical center in Zachary says it is officially closing its labor and delivery unit on Sunday, Oct. 11.
In a news release on Tuesday, Oct. 7, Lane Regional Medical Center announced the closure of its inpatient Labor and Delivery Unit. The medical center also said that a number of its physicians will join the medical staff at Woman’s Hospital and begin delivering babies there starting Monday, Oct. 12.
CEO Frank Corcoran said that the volume of deliveries has made it increasingly difficult for Lane to sustain the service independently.
“We recognize the importance of the Labor and Delivery unit to the families who have relied on Lane for generations,” said Corcoran. “This transition gives women access to delivery services through Woman’s while preserving prenatal care in Zachary.”
According to officials, Lane and Woman’s Hospital are also in discussions for Woman’s to assume ownership and operation of Lane’s outpatient OB/GYN clinic. The partnership would ensure the clinic remains open at its current location on Lane’s campus.
In August, the medical center also shut down its Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Clinic and eliminated 14 positions as part of “organizational changes.”
At this time, Lane says it is in discussions with other healthcare organizations involving other areas of the hospital’s operations.
