An excerpt from a simulation of a binary supermassive black hole system with its accretion disks. Binary supermassive black holes result from galaxy mergers. Each supermassive black hole carries with it an entourage of gas and dust clouds. Scientists believe that a galactic collision drives much of this material toward the central black holes, which consume it on a timescale similar to that required for the binary merger. As the black holes draw closer together, magnetic and gravitational forces heat the remaining gas, producing light that astronomers should be able to observe. © NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center
