Academy Award nominee and Transformers star Mark Wahlberg continues to prove himself a major draw on streaming…even when his movie is a flop. Smashing together the forgotten skills of Jason Bourne with the world beneath our world approach of sci-fi classic The Matrix, Wahlberg takes the lead in an action thriller genre mash-up that is now finding redemption on Prime Video.

Mark Wahlberg’s Memory Holds the Key To Saving Humanity

Adapted (very) loosely from D. Eric Maikranz’s 2009 novel “The Reincarnationist Papers,” Mark Wahlberg takes the lead once again in Infinite, which introduces a secret community of immortals who, after death, are reincarnated with the skills they’ve learned throughout their past lives. Of course, Wahlberg’s unassuming everyman can’t remember any of this, which is a real pickle, as his memory could hold the key to saving humanity.

Self-medicated and on the brink of a mental breakdown, Evan is sought by this secret group, calling themselves “Infinites,” who hope to unlock his memory and save the world. The Bourne meets The Matrix comparison is clear, but sadly Infinite did not come even close to matching either franchise in quality.

Released back in 2021, directed by The Equalizer and Training Day filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, and starring Sophie Cookson, Jason Mantzoukas, Rupert Friend, Liz Carr, Toby Jones, and Dylan O’Brien, with Oscar nominee and MCU star Chiwetel Ejiofor as the villain of the piece, Infinite was met with scathing reviews at the time. A critical flop, the action thriller is positively decomposing thanks to a “rotten” score of just 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a slightly improved 33% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. But five years later, Infinite has been successfully resurrected.

The Sci-Fi Action Thriller Is Now Being Resurrected on Streaming

While Infinite skipped theaters entirely and debuted on Paramount+, it’s likely that the sci-fi thriller would have struggled to get past what amounted to ruthless word-of-mouth. However, in this modern world of streaming, everyone hating the movie has become a little meaningless, with the enticingly high concept clearly enough to tempt audiences at home to hit play. Infinite is now climbing the charts on Prime Video, where it stands alongside other critical misfires such as Hugh Jackman’s Van Helsing and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, as well as critical darlings such as Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and John Wick: Chapter 4.

With his half-a-decade-old action thriller now rising, Mark Wahlberg has plenty currently in the pipeline. Following his divisive crime thriller By Any Means, the popular actor will continue to ply his action hero trade in the likes of The Operator from CopShop director Joe Carnahan, Apex filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur’s The Big Fix, and stretch his comedic muscles in Ted: The Animated Series.
