St. Augustine crews monitor roads as king tides, rain raise flooding concerns

  • October 10, 2026

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – City and county crews are monitoring roads in St. Johns County as king tides and heavy rain bring flooding concerns to St. Augustine. Several cars have stalled on flooded roads over the past week, city officials said.

During a drive through the city, roads in the historic downtown area appeared wet but showed no significant flooding. There was some standing water along Oglethorpe Boulevard in Davis Shores, and water was ponding in other areas.

The city said king tides were expected to affect the area from Friday the 9th through the 13th. Davis Shores residents said they were glad to have a seawall, which has helped address flooding in the neighborhood.

At Maria Sanchez Lake, a seawall is in the design process, with a pump planned for the south end of the area. The project is intended to help address flooding in downtown St. Augustine.

“Our storm drains are like a funnel, and so it can handle as much water that you pour into it, and it’s basically the rain. So if you pour really fast, the funnel will overflow,” Jessica Beach, the city’s chief resilience officer, said.

City Public Works crews are on call to respond if rain intensifies. St. Johns County crews are also evaluating roads, clearing drains and adding signs if flooding returns. Officials urge drivers not to drive through floodwaters.
