NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Old Hickory Country Club marked 100 years in the Nashville area, tracing its history from a golf course created for DuPont employees to a longtime gathering place for golfers, community events and music-connected members.

The club was founded in 1926 by the DuPont Company for employees in Old Hickory, a community built around the company’s presence in the area, according to the club’s historical account.

What began as a six-hole course later expanded to 18 holes in 1941. The club says its original greens were made with sand and cottonseed oil, a far different playing surface from the course golfers use today.

The property’s history predates the course. The club says the land was once home to the Bondurant family, described in its history as French Huguenots. The original Bondurant home was demolished in the 1940s and replaced with the building now associated with the country club.

Old Hickory Country Club was purchased in 2018 by a partnership led by Steve Smith, a longtime club member and Nashville hospitality entrepreneur known for his connection to downtown venues including Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.

Smith said he saw an opportunity to improve a course he had known as a member.

“I was a member of the Old Hickory Country Club for years and I loved the course, I just felt it needed an upgrade when I bought it,” Smith said in a release. “Now, we are celebrating 100 years of this beautiful piece of property that many of my celebrity friends call their course.”

The club says its history has also included charitable golf events connected to country music artists, including events associated with Jason Aldean, Gary LeVox and Tracy Lawrence.

The anniversary celebration was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, with a morning flyover and an evening program including entertainment and fireworks.
