LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — October is Disability Employment Awareness Month, and community members got a chance to see firsthand how Achieve of Central Virginia supports adults with disabilities during an event held today.
The organization helps adults with disabilities build life skills through work experience and form friendships. Achieve of Central Virginia provides adult day support, vocational training, and employment services, as well as opportunities for social connections and independence.
The open house also marked an anniversary, celebrating that its work began in October 1963.
Executive Director Adam Wilson said the building has recently undergone several upgrades.
“We’ve done a lot; you see the walls we’ve done here. We got the floors redone. We’ve got a lot of activity rooms revamped,” Wilson said. “We’re kind of renovating the place and making things a little bit nicer. We want to show folks the work we’re doing.”
Wilson said the staff is grateful for the chance to invest in the lives of people with disabilities and to provide opportunities to build life skills through the organization’s programs.
