A unique book vending machine was recently installed at a Rutland City School, encouraging reading and good behavior from students

A new vending machine at a Rutland City school is introducing a unique reward system for its second-through eighth-grade students.

This machine, used by Rutland City Public School’s Allen Street Campus, dispenses books. Teachers are using it to incentivize good behavior from their classes.

Students earn special tokens and deposit them in the machine, which spits out a brand-new book that’s theirs to keep. Students and staff said it’s already proven to be an effective motivator.

“We’ve had it for a couple of days. The kids have been super excited already, picking out books they want to earn, asking for different books to be put in,” said Cara Tomasini, who works in Special Education in Rutland.

The school is planning to keep the machine stocked throughout the year, giving students lots of opportunities to earn a book.
