Have you seen the next Super Treasure Hunt for the 2027 Mainline series? It’s a Shelby GT500 in Spectraflame Gold! It’s the seventh one we’ve learned about for next year, and the third to represent a car manufacturer from the USA. We just had a STH Mustang earlier this year!
It was obviously a different casting (the Mustang GTD), but that’s not to say Mattel won’t often reuse the same design over and over again. Seeing repeat collectibles isn’t typically an exciting moment, unless you couldn’t score them on their first appearance.
But is simply changing colors while maintaining the theme bearable after a certain point? I recently showed you a fairly confusing Silver Series set for 2027 that was aimed at fans of The Fast and the Furious universe. The S15 and R35 GT-R were somewhat interesting, but not exactly what you’d call “lore accurate”.
You can only have so many replicas of the cars from the movies, even if you keep changing the wheels once in a while. Changing the colors altogether could hurt the sales, so using alternate versions of the iconic liveries seems to be the way forward for Mattel. We’ve seen it several times before, including in the ZAMAC-like anniversary set.
And now here we are again. Reading the comments on Social Media about the new Nitro Grid set will take a while, and I recommend a bucket of popcorn while you’re at it. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX is number 1 of 5 for the set, and two of its variations since 2023 were reference to Sean Boswell’s car from Tokyo Drift.
As someone pointed out, this set feels like a mix between Fast and Furious and Neon Speeders, and it might as well been called Neon Grid instead. The Evo is one of two cars in the set that will be rocking the Star 5-Spoke wheels, alongside Erwin’s 1996 Acura Integra GSR (#3 of 5). The latter is a Silver Series exclusive release, as opposed to the Evo which has had premium iterations as well.
I’m willing to bet Brian’s Mitsubishi Eclipse will be the most popular collectible in the mix, even if it abandoned the Neon Green finish in favor of a Neon Blue look. It used the same MM5 wheels for both the 2025 and 2026 Fast and Furious replicas, and I imagine most collectors will keep buying these regardless of how many changes it goes through.
I might be tempted to go after Dom’s RX-7, as I’ve almost made it a point to expand my purple scale model car collection. As far as I can tell, the 1992 Honda Civic EG will have a metal base, just like it had in the “Race-Off” set earlier this year, and with several premium releases before that. If this set works, I imagine other cars from the saga will get the same treatment next.
